"Yes, Henri was definitely born in Berlin, Rose told me so, after I found Berlin written on the back of one of the very early photos of him. Because of that, I am surprised that his birthplace could be listed as otherwise on any ship manifests. However, because the war was on, or about to be on, with Germany, Henri, and, most probably those who arranged for his passage to the US, didn't want it to be known that he had been born in Berlin. Strasbourg was the birthplace picked because their records office had had a huge fire and it was impossible to prove anyone hadn't been born there. Henri joined the Coast Guard, and was later somehow transferred into the Merchant Navy when he was about 15 years old. I got the impression that would have been more difficuilt had he had Berlin listed as his birthplace" from Lynne Beckendorff's email to Jamie Kotler 14 May 2008
